Satanic Porn Monk??? Give Me a Break!

A conversation I had yesterday evening reminded me just how ignorant many Catholics are about their faith. We're living in an age when anti-Catholicism is not only acceptable, it's encouraged in many not-so-subtle ways by the main stream media. The best selling book, Anti-Catholicism in America : The Last Acceptable Prejudice is an excellent treatment of the subject.

The thing that discourages me is that while anti-Catholicism is alive and well in our culture, the attitude of many "Catholics" does nothing to discourage it. We're faced with garbage like the DaVinci Code book and movie as well as less obvious propaganda on an almost daily basis.

Just when I thought it couldn't get much worse, today I read a press release with the incredible title, "Satanic Porn Monk Shuffled to Monastery for Artwork Scandals as Cover-up Continues. It seems that Marianist monk Steve Erspamer has been creating religious art with hidden satanic symbols and even the word "sex". A sample of his scandalous work even appears on the cover of Oregon Catholic Press' 2006 "Music Issue", a Catholic music book that's used in almost half of all Catholic churches.

To make matters worse, Brother Erspamer lives right here in St. Louis. Or, at least, he did until recently. According to the press release, he's been transferred to St. Meinrad Abbey in Indiana, as part of a Church cover up.

To quote the PR piece, "Operating for many years under the watch of Archbishop Raymond Burke in St. Louis, Erspamer has recently been moved to the suspect monastery of St. Meinrad in Indiana and put on religious probation, after being caught by artist and film producer Michael A. Calace, who profiles a multitude of Erspamer’s sexual and satanic artwork in 'Rape of the Soul.'" "Rape..." is a low budget "documentary" film that claims that everyone from Leonardo DaVinci to Brother Esperamer have been creating satanic images in the name of the Church for centuries. Of course, the Church has been busily covering it up.

However, no one seems to be as prolific as Br. Steve, who "is a specialist who has steadily supplied the world with over 1500 blasphemous works of sexual, satanic and occult art, which were always readily showcased by Catholic publishers."

Oregon Catholic Press is accused of being the biggest offender. While they may be guilty of seriously bad musical taste, I really doubt that they're actively engaged in promoting satanic worship.

The film's producer blames the priest sexual abuse crisis on the presence of this artwork in our seminaries.

Normally, I would provide a link to the article referenced here, but in this case, I decided not to. You can find it easily enough, if you want to, but I'm not going to promote this garbage here. I'll just tell you that there is supposed to be a hidden swastica and the word "sex" on the cover of the "Music Issue." Please don't spend mass time looking for it.
